SWIRL AROUND IN YOUR LEHENGA
Lehengas are no longer confined to desi shores as this classic Indian outfit has got a modern twist and is now being flaunted at international events like the Cannes by Bollywood stars
If worn right, you can also wear it as a gown to an even and totally represent your culture — ROHIT KUMAR, STYLIST
Just when we thought that lehenga is only for weddings and parties in India, Sonam Kapoor went out to prove us wrong by wearing it at Cannes. Also, Kim Kardashian doing a magazine shoot in a lehenga proves that this Indian attire has gone international now. But how and when can a regular person pull off this outfit?
Nishit Gupta, a city- based designer says, “If there is one silhouette that is the most loved outfit for wedding functions today, it has to be the evergreen lehengas. And to the fact that lehengas are going international, with the celebrities wearing it to such renowned events, itself says it all — they are no longer restricted to just weddings or as bridal attire. Though, lehengas being the prominent choice of most of the brides, the attire is taking pace with its multifarious designs. The secret, is the unique and unusual styling and the attention to detail, to give each design a sense of ‘ luxury’.”
A white lehenga was sported by Sonam Kapoor at Cannes, we figure out how and when it can be worn by an average Joe. We get another emerging young Indian attire designer and stylist, Nikita Chanda to talk about the trend and how can one style it. She says, “With the emerging trends such as the ruffled lehengas, the fringes, the tasselled ones, the cold- shoulders and the embroidered crop tops are all modish in their own way. A regular person can easily pull it off not only as wedding attire but as a casual wear too. With every trending design that is topping the charts today will eventually venture into an experiment that’ll marry clashing styles which will surprise and beguile the fashion forwards.”
The lehenga look was even sported by Kim Kardashian for a magazine cover shoot for India, while she looked stunning in the orange- reddish lehengas giving it a different look altogether. Stylist, R oh it Ka poor describes this trend as an international trendsetter but also says that “Lehengas, if worn right, it can be something not just for your wedding parties but can also be worn as a gown to an event while representing your culture and ethnicity. There have been multiple times where I have seen my foreign friends wear lehengas for their Halloween parties, or to their birthday parties because they love the look so much. And their intention is not just loving the ethnicity and culture but just loving the look altogether.”
