Doctor assaulted by kin of patient

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

In another such incident, a doctor in a Delhi government hospital was assaulted by relatives of a patient on Thursday.

The incident was reported from Attar Sain Jain Hospital in the city on Thursday morning when the doctor, identified as Abhinav Prakash, was attending patients in the OPD. A relative of the patient, claiming to be a hospital staff, insisted that he should see the patient without registration and on priority basis.

When Dr Prakash asked him to get a registration card, the patient, upon hearing this, started verbally abusing the doctor. His attendant threatened the doctor and then physically assaulted him in front of the medical superintendent of the hospital. The latter had arrived at the spot after being informed about the incident.

The doctor, in a letter to the hospital administration, has urged it to register an institutional FIR.

The Delhi government had, in November last year, directed hospitals to file an institutional FIR after any instance of assault.

In his letter, the doctor also said that he was grievously hurt during the incident.

The incident was the latest in a series of assault cases by irate relatives of patients on doctors in government hospitals.

Representatives of doctors’ associations in Delhi have expressed concern over the attack and demanded the arrest of the attackers. They have also asked the authorities to take measures for the safety of doctors.

Condemning the attack, Federation of Resident Doctors Association ( FORDA) president Dr Vivek Chouksey said, “Such attacks on duty doctors are taking place on a daily basis in various hospitals all over the country and are highly regretful.”
