Thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising in the sky from most parts in southeast Delhi after a truck caught fire in Malviya Nagar on Tuesday evening.

The fire spread from the truck to a rubber godown nearby, which is just walking distance from Select City Walk, one of the biggest malls in Delhi.

It is the highest category fire and the fire department has sent about 32 fire engines to the area to bring it under control. The smoke is visible from nearby areas like Saket, and even from Nehru Place, about 5 km away.

Reaching the spot proved quite tough for the fire engines as the lanes in the area are very narrow and congested.

According to an official of the Delhi Fire Services, “a call was received around 5 pm regarding fire in a truck in Malviya Nagar, and 32 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

The official said the process to douse the flames is still under way, adding that no casualty has been reported so far.

“There were also no damage reported till now,” the official said.

The fire department says there is a real danger of the fire spreading from the godown factory to other nearby areas. The fire has already spread to the residential building next to the godown, but it is said to be vacant. The buildings around the godown have been evacuated and the area has been cordoned off. The godown is very close to Sant Nirankari Public School which was empty at the time the fire began.

The cause of the fire is not known, the official said, adding that the police investigation is on.

Local Aam Aadmi Party MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj alleged that there were many such illegal godowns and illegal factories were many disasters are waiting to happen.

He also said that the local AAP councillor had complained to SDMC officials, but no action was taken.
