Amit, Gaurav seal last four spots, Vikas loses in Halle
New Delhi, June 21: Commonwealth Games medallists Amit Panghal ( 49kg) and Gaurav Solanki ( 52kg) were among the three Indian boxers to enter the semifinals but Vikas Krishan ( 75kg) bowed out of the Chemistry Cup in Halle, Germany.
Dheeraj Rangi ( 64kg) was the third to be assured of a medal after he defeated local hope Wladislaw Baryshnik 41. Krishan’s campaign ended with a loss to Olympic champion Arlen Lopez of Cuba.
In bouts held late on Wednesday, Panghal defeated Germany’s Christopher Goman 5- 0, while Gaurav brushed aside Russia’s Vadim Kudriakov by a similar margin.
Panghal will next face Cuba’s Damian Arce Duarte, who got a bye in the opening round.
Solanki faces Ireland’s Conor Quinn in his last four stage bout. In Mongolia, India were assured of four medals at the Ulaanbaatar Cup after four boxers including world and Asian silverwinner Sonia Lather ( 57kg), advanced to the semi- finals on Thursday.
Joining her in the lastfour stage were Lovlina Borgohain ( 69kg), Himanshu Sharma ( 49kg) and Ashish ( 64kg).
All four boxers are guaranteed of at least a bronze medal each.
However, world silver medallist Sarjubala Devi ( 51kg) bowed out in the quarter- finals after losing a close bout to Mongolian Myagmardulam Nandinsetseg 1- 4.
Sonia produced an assured performance to defeat local favourite Myagmar Gundegmaa to make the last- four stage.
