Intensify mosquito- control measures: L- G

With the arrival of monsoon in the national capital, Delhi lieutenant- governor ( L- G) Anil Baijal on Thursday directed local bodies and other agencies to intensify vector- control measures here.

He also directed the authoritie­s concerned to ensure coordinati­on with neighbouri­ng states in tackling vector- borne diseases.

The directives were issued at a meeting that was chaired by the L- G to discuss the status of measures taken to combat mosquitobo­rne diseases such as dengue, chikunguny­a and malaria, and seasonal influenza in the city.

The meeting was attended by health minister Satyendar Jain, North Delhi Municipal Corporatio­n ( NDMC) chairperso­n Naresh Kumar and senior officers of the health and urban developmen­t department­s.

Three municipal commission­ers and public works department, police, railway and Delhi Metro Rail Corporatio­n ( DMRC) officials among others were also present.

In the meeting, the L- G was informed that letters along with an advisory, including “dos & don’ts”, has been prepared and sent to various government and private offices, buildings and institutio­ns for prevention and control of vector- borne diseases, according to a statement issued by the L- G office.

Monsoon hit the national capital on Thursday, a day ahead of its scheduled arrival.

“The L- G has directed for intensific­ation of vectorcont­rol measures by field staff of local bodies ( domestic breeding checkers ( DBCs) .. Regular house- to- house visits for checking and eliminatin­g all possible breeding sites should be made, besides regular monitoring of DBCs by higher officials,” the L- G office said.

The statement read that Mr Baijal has directed the government and civic bodies to motivate resident welfare associatio­ns ( RWAs) and general public to participat­e in prevention of breeding of mosquitoes.

Community leaders and field level agencies should also be involved in generating awareness in the community, the L- G office said.

The statement stated that Mr Baijal has also directed to intensify vectorcont­rol activities and community awareness activities in identified high- risk wards and underprivi­leged areas, unauthoris­ed colonies, JJ Clusters and constructi­on sites.

The lieutenant- governor has asked for regular review meetings at the level of district magistrate­s with all stakeholde­rs in order to review the situation in their respective districts.
