Baijal directs cops to increase beat patrolling

Lt Governor ( L- G) Anil Baijal on Thursday directed the Delhi police to intensify beat patrolling on motorcycles to increase coverage area.

Mr Baijal also advised the education department to deploy a greater number of security guards in and around schools to boost security.

The L- G on Thursday chaired a law and order meeting and reviewed action against street crime in the city. The meeting was attended by chief secretary Anshu Prakash, principal secretary ( home) Manoj Kumar Parida, police commissioner Amulya Patnaik and other senior officers of departments concerned.

“At the outset, Mr Baijal directed that beat patrolling on motorcycles be intensified as it serves the dual purpose of increased police visibility as well as greater area coverage in a short span of time,” the L- G office said in a statement.

It stated that the L- G has urged that dynamic picketing and integrated checking be promoted so as to take criminals by surprise, and that the barricades must be fixed with reflective tapes and manned properly.

He also stated that community engagement initiatives such as the Eyes and Ears scheme, YUVA, Sashakti, Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, Prahari be intensified to get optimum results, according to the statement, .

The L- G also directed that the registration of senior citizens residing alone should be facilitated by the police and regular surprise checks to this effect may be carried out, it stated.

“The police has been advised to carry out an outreach programme so that maximum senior citizens may be registered. “Emphasis should be laid on publicising efforts undertaken by the police for safety and security of senior citizens, the L- G office stated.

Excise commissioner Amzad Tak apprised Mr Baijal that joint drives along with the police have effectively helped in enforcing closing hours of restaurants. He said that exemplary punishment must be ensured, as per law, wherever liquor is served to underage persons.
