Ahmed Patel questions motive behind diluting qualifications for CEA

‘ Economists’ positions, even in banks, have more rigorous requirements. What is their ulterior motive? — Ahmed Patel, Cong leader

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel on Wednesday questioned the government’s intention behind diluting the educational and professional qualifications for the post of chief economic advisor, wondering if it has any “ulterior motive.”

“Why has the government diluted the educational and professional requirements for the post of chief economic advisor? ‘ Economists’ positions, even in banks have more rigorous requirements. What is their ulterior motive?,” he asked on Twitter.

After Arvind Subramanian quit from the post of chief economic advisor, the government put up a notice on the finance ministry website inviting applications by July 20 for appointment of chief economic adviser on deputation basis.

As per the notice, the candidate must have master’s degree in economics or finance from a recognised university or institution and the maximum age limit for appointment on deputation ( including short- term contract/ contract) shall exceed 56 years as on the date of application.

Interestingly Mr Subramanian quit his job as CEA almost a year before his tenure was to come to an end. The Congress has been targeting the government over its economic policies.

In strongly worded tweet Congress president Rahul Gandhi had attacked the government over the resignation of Mr Subramanian. “The brightest flee the sinking ship, as the invisible hand of the RSS steers it onto the rocks. Meanwhile, Captain DeMo is fast asleep. It’s crazy out there!,” he claimed on Twitter.
