Woman killed in mishap, Uber charges for trip

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

After a city- based engineer, Tanzila Shaikh ( 35), died in an accident a month ago on Eastern Express Highway near Bhandup while travelling in an Uber cab, her husband was horrified to discover that the app- based cab service had charged for the incomplete ride. However, the company refunded the charged amount, ` 568.10, on being questioned by the husband, Muzammil, as reported in some sections of the media.

On June 14, Tanzila Shaikh ( 35), lost her life when the Uber cab, in which she was travelling, collided with a stationary garbage van that was wrongly parked on Eastern Express Highway near Bhandup. Muzammil was reported saying that an errant driver caused the accident, which led to the loss of his wife’s life, and the cab service allegedly debited ` 568.10 from her Paytm account despite the journey never having been completed.

When contacted by this newspaper, Uber’s spokeperson Anusha

Shenoy did not answer calls nor SMSes. Muzammil could not be contacted despite attempts.

Tanzila was a BTech graduate and employed with a private firm.

On June 14, Tanzila was headed for a meeting in Goregaon. As there was no parking, she decided to take a cab instead of her car. Also, Muzammil mentioned that the post- mortem report said that some foreign object ( a piece of glass or wiper) had pierced deep into her brain, resulting in immediate death. After Muzammil complained to Uber, the amount was promptly refunded, he said.
