Doctors removed a footballsized ovarian tumour weighing nine kg from a 50- year- old woman. The patient, a Gurgaon resident, came to know about the tumour when she consulted doctors complaining about pelvic pain, while doing household chores.

According to the doctors, the swelling in her lower abdomen was so prominent that it gave an impression that she was pregnant.

This affected her image as well, and she felt embarrassed in public owing to her large waist size. Unaware of her medical condition, the woman, to reduce her waist, had limited her diet and continued with an active regimen of exercise. But all this was of no use.

However, the misconception of being pregnant was easily ruled out as the patient had crossed the postmenopausal stage.

Her family had absolutely no clue why she has not been able to deduce in spite of leading an active life, why she could not reduce her waist.

“After admitting her in a hospital and getting an ultrasound done followed by an MRI, the doctors told us that a large mass was occupying the whole of her abdomen. And that the said mass rose from her pelvis and reaching up to her diaphragm.

“It was then that we detected a large ovarian tumor weighing nine kg. Such tumors are critical in nature and can become cancerous or life- threatening by itself,” said consultant, obstetrics- gynaecology, Columbia Asia Hospital, Dr Amita Shah. “A small hole was made in the tumor, which drained out three litre of fluids thus reducing the tumour size and then we took it out by making a small incision, she added.
