In a major breakthrough, a joint team of Uttar Pradesh anti- terror squad ( ATS) and the West Bengal police has arrested two members of the terror outfit Jamaat- ulMujahideen Bangladesh ( JMB) from Greater Noida, officials said on Tuesday.

The two arrested JMB members were identified as Musharraf aka Musa and Rubel Ahmed, both Bangladeshi nationals, SSP Ajay Pal Sharma said.

The duo was arrested from Surajpur in Greater Noida on the outskirts of the national capital. They are being interrogated by officials of the UP ATS and the intelligence department.

According to sources in the police department, the two JMB members were planning to carry out a major terror strike in the National Capital Region ( NCR). More revelations in this regard can be made only after interrogation, they said.

The JMB, founded in 1998 by Shaikh Abdur Rahman, was banned in 2005 for setting off about 500 bombs simultaneously all around Bangladesh.

The intelligence department had received a tip- off that some JMB members were collecting funds in the NCR for their outfit. During interrogation it was revealed that they were active members of JUM and had escaped from Bangladesh in March 2018.

Security has been tightened in NCR ahead of Independence Day on August 15.

Security and intelligence agencies have warned of a possible terror attack ahead of the Independence Day planned by Pakistanbased terrorist outfits.

The information was revealed by Jaish- eMohammed ( JeM) terrorists Syed Muneer- ulHassan Qadri, Ashiq Baba, and Tariq Ahmad Dar, who were recently arrested by the National Investigation Agency ( NIA) for their role in the Nagrota Army camp attack in 2016 that killed seven Indian soldiers.

During interrogation, the counter- terror probe agency found out that JeM has been sending its trained agents, which mostly include misguided Kashmiri youths, under various garbs.

The authorities are also keeping an eye on all the sewer lines and manholes leading up to the Red Fort and on the trees, doors, windows, and pillars facing the monument.
