In a shocking incident, a foetus was recovered from a lavatory of an Air Asia plane after it landed in Delhi’s IGI Airport from Guwahati on Wednesday afternoon, the police said. The crew of flight I5 784, which took off from Imphal, informed about this to the police and authorities.

The baby appeared to have been delivered on board in the toilet and had toilet paper stuffed in its mouth. The mother appears to be an underage girl coming from Guwahati, police sources ◗ said.

The police suspects that the infant was delivered in a stillborn condition and AirAsia said that a medical examination conducted by a doctor at the New Delhi airport had confirmed that the baby “had been delivered onboard”.

According to the police, a woman who boarded the plane in Guwahati delivered “a pre- mature dead foetus”. The foetus has been sent for a postmortem and the lady has been sent for a medical examination. Further action will be taken on the basis of the reports, said the police. In a statement, Air Asia said a suspect has been held back by police for further investigation, adding she was identified on questioning of all female passengers onboard. “A newborn infant was found lifeless in one of the lavatories when the aircraft was being prepared for landing. The Delhi police was alerted and a doctor from the medical team at Delhi International Airport confirmed that the baby had been delivered onboard,” it said. The matter has been reported to the DGCA, the airline said. “We will be assisting in the investigation and cooperating with all concerned agencies. AirAsia India would like to apologise to all guests experiencing disruptions in their flight schedule,” it added.
