In a shocking incident, the decomposed body of a 26- year- old girl was found in the closet of her house in Gokulpuri area in Northeast Delhi on Thursday afternoon under mysterious circumstances.

The deceased has been identified as Neeta and a case under IPC Sections of murder ( 302) has been registered for further investigation. Two suspects, including the woman’s friend, have been detained for questioning, said DCP ( Northeast) Atul Kumar Thakur.

It is suspected that she was in a live- in relationship with a married man. The victim was allegedly pressurising him to get a divorce from his wife and get married to her, a police official said. According to preliminary investigation, the girl had probably died two days ago. The incident came to light when neighbours noticed a foul smell emanating from the house on Thursday afternoon. When the woman’s boyfriend, Raees, did not get any response from inside, he informed the police. After breaking open the door, the police traced the foul smell to a closet in the woman’s room and found her body.

The autopsy report is awaited to ascertain the exact reason of death. A preliminary medical examination revealed that the body had strangulation marks around her neck.

The police said the woman had started living away from her parents after they opposed her relationship with the man. She had shifted to the house eight months ago and it was registered in her name. Her mother and younger sister live in their ancestral house in Gokulpuri. The police teams are working on two theories on the motive of murder. It is suspected that she was murdered by Raees, who suspected her of having an illicit affair with someone else.

He has been detained for questioning and is among the prime suspects. The forensic teams visited the crime spot and have collected evidence from the house.
