Facebook sheds big traffic, YouTube gains

Social networking site’s monthly page view comes down from 8.5 b to 4.7 b in US

New York, Aug. 10: It’s loss for Facebook, and gain for YouTube. That’s what a latest study report on the trends on social media use says about the competition between the two major players.

And the loss for Facebook is quite heavy, too. According to a new study by market research firm SimilarWeb, Facebook has shed four billion monthly page visits, from 8.5 billion to 4.7 billion, in the last two years. And with the gain, YouTube is all set to take over as the second biggest site, traffic- wise, in the U. S. The new order will have Google on top, followed by Google- owned YouTube and Facebook.

The drop, according to CNBC, is “severe”. “The five websites receiving the most traffic in the U. S. in the last several years have been Google, Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo and Amazon, in that order. However, Facebook has seen a severe decline in monthly page visits, according to the study. Although Facebook’s app traffic has grown, it is not enough to make up for that loss,” CNBC said, quoting the study.

Observers say Google’s attempt to create a feed-based social network through Google Plus did not succeed against Facebook but YouTube, from its own stable, has been able to do so.

The loss by Facebook signals the new pattern of a broad realignment in the social media landscape that’s only going to continue. It’s also apparently creating buying opportunities, they said.

The next big target on the social media scene is Twitter, according to global trading and fund services firm BTIG. “Twitter's 2017 comeback has been fueled by refocusing the company on its core product, creating robust video advertising opportunities for brands and most importantly, making sure users have a better experience every time they visit ( by showing them tweets they are interested in and reducing the visibility of trolling), which increases the desire to come back to Twitter more often,” it said in a blog post earlier this year.
