Govt officers will ‘ adopt’ schools for better results

Officers to prepare action plan to improve pass percentage ◗

The Delhi government has ordered education officers to adopt some Delhi government schools due to their poor performance. In 2018, 72 government schools had a pass percentage below 41 per cent in class X and in class XII — a decline of more than 10 per cent was observed in 29 schools in comparison to the past year. The government intends to see an improvement in the performance of these schools through initiating ‘ adoption’.

The Directorate of Education ( DoE) issued a circular on August 8, stating, “All concerned officers of the directorate are requested to adopt the allotted schools for monitoring the academic performance during the session 2018- 19.”

Mentors are expected to visit the respective schools at least once in a fortnight and submit the report on the performance of the schools preferably on the same day of the visit.

The pass percentage of Delhi government schools fell to 69.32 per cent from 92.44 per cent in 2018 and when offered a choice between internal and Board exams, most schools preferred internal examinations.

X exams from Delhi government schools, out of which, only 94,160 passed from 990 schools, leaving 276 schools with a pass percentage lower than 60 per cent.

The lowest pass percentage was at Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Rana Pratap Bagh which had only 6.06 per cent students passing the examination. Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Lalita Park saw a decline of 28 per cent in the pass percentage of class XII.

After adoption, the appointed officers will have to keep an eye on their respective schools and the authorities to ensure that the syllabus is covered properly.

The officers will have to fill a proforma with their action plan to make sure that the improvement of the schools and the students is ensured.
