In a bid to earn sustainable additional revenue, the Delhi metro is going to give the licensing right for transporting of cargo on airport express line of DMRC to private companies.

The DMRC has floated a tender in this regard. The airport express line, which is also known as the orange line, is the fastest mode of travelling between Dwarka Sector21 and New Delhi Railway Station and it takes only 26 minutes for travelling between the aforesaid stations.

“With this new initiatives like transporting of cargo through Airport Express Line trains in such a manner that on one hand it gives sustainable additional revenue to the corporation, and on the other hand providing eco- friendly, safest and fastest mode of transportation of cargo to private sector participant companies,” said a DMRC official.

The cargo operator will carry cargo in containers in metro trains of airport express line utilising the already installed Baggage Handling System ( BHS), equipment, containers at New Delhi and IGI T- 3 Airport metro stations. The DMRC will arrange the required manpower for movement/ stuffing/ de- stuffing of cargo in containers from its existing trained BHS manpower contractor with charging the fee.

DMRC will also provide their existing baggage handling system containers for cargo movements. Currently, the baggage tracking system is not designed to segregate cargo containers and DMRC’s checked- in luggage containers and generate report for the same. DMRC will conduct a trial period and review it for 3 months.
