Rains wreck havoc, traffic hit
Waterlogging in most parts of city; more showers today
Commuters in Delhi had to face a harrowing time on Saturday morning after heavy rains logged several roads. Nearly 30 people were left stranded on a flooded road in Yamuna Bazar after a state bus broke down.
The 30 passengers stuck at Ring Road near Hanuman Mandir had to wade through thigh- high water to get to safety even as police officers came to their rescue.
The temperature is likely to remain low as the city is set to receive more rain on Sunday. The fresh downpour on Saturday morning has brought some relief from the hot and humid weather. However, the waterlogged roads caused inconvenience to many commuters despite it being an off day for most office- goers.
Streets were waterlogged near the Civic Centre at Minto Road and also in Civil Lines area where various cars were seen half- submerged in water.
“Waterlogging was reported at Iron Bridge Loni Road, Khajuri Chowk Wazirabad Road, Bhajanpura Main Market, Apsara Border, Yamuna Marg, MGM Road, Ring Road, Vikas Marg, and Chatta Rail Lothian Road,” a Delhi traffic police official said.
“Roads submerged following the rainfall included those under Modi Mill flyover, Rao Tula Ram TPoint on the way to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Rajghat, Janpath, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Lajpat Nagar Market on Ring Road, Inderprastha Marg near Delhi police headquarters, Rajendra Prasad Road, GT Karnal Road, Minto Road, and others,” he added.
The traffic police has asked people to avoid the Delhi- Noida road towards Ashram where traffic was blocked after a bus broke down.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan also had to cancel the Change of Guard ceremony owing to heavy rains.
“The Change of Guard ceremony on the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan will not be held today ( September 1, 2018) owing to heavy rain in New Delhi,” the President House tweeted.
Traffic was affected at Mathura Road, Shershah Road, Mathura Road to Bhairon Road, Purana Quila Road, Bihari colony, Maharashi Raman Marg, Teen Murti Lane, 11 Murti, and Girdhari Lal Goswami Marg near post office due to excessive waterlogging.
Delhi has received 61 mm of rainfall since Saturday and the weatherman predicted that the downpour would continue throughout the day. The Delhi traffic police is posting alerts on its Twitter handle to inform the residents about which routes to avoid.
