Coach Harendra rejects need for a psychologist
The players need to control their emotions during key moments in high- pressure matches, said Indian hockey coach Harendra Singh here on Friday. Much like the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, India fumbled at the Asian Games after promising a lot.

“During high level and high intensity times, we have to show our character and personality on the field. Every player has to control emotions and play according to team requirement,” Harendra said at an event here on Friday where the World Cup jerseys were released. The World Cup will be held in Bhubaneswar in November and December.
“We will work on it and rectify that weakness. Only polishing has to be done and that will require two weeks. Fitness and skill wise, the Indian boys are better than any team but mental thinking needs to change,” he added.
The former defender ruled out use of a psychologist for his players.
“Why do you need psychologists who have no clue about the sport and players? The biggest psychologist is the coach and the player himself. If I will not motivate myself, then no one in the world can motivate me. If gaining confidence is the aim, then you can even consult anyone and take motivation from him. The word psychologist itself carries a negative vibe,” he said.
