JNUSU poll panel offers lifeline to NSUI nominee

■ Refuses to cancel Vikas Yadav’s application

- AGE CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, SEPT. 10

The Election Committee ( EC) for the JNUSU polls on Monday announced that it will not be cancelling the National Students’ Union of India’s ( NSUI) presidential candidate’s nomination as was recommended by the grievance redressal committee, in the upcoming polls for the varsity’s students union.

Vikas Yadav’s nomination was cancelled by the JNU Dean Student’s Welfare office on September 6, citing a proctorial inquiry previously initiated against him under which he was punished with a ` 20,000 fine and hostel transfer.

“In reference to the letter sent by the GRC regarding the candidature of Vikas Yadav, the Election Committee has unanimously decided not to accept the recommendation.

Hence his nomination remains valid,” the EC head said. Meanwhile, the Delhi high court also on Monday put on hold the operation of JNU’s order cancelling Mr Yadav’s candidature in the polls.

Justice Siddharth Mridul said the decision of the Jawaharlal Nehru University ( JNU) was “unsustainable on innumerable grounds” as Mr Yadav was not even informed what the complaint against him was that had led to the cancellation of his candidature.

The court said the operation of the order will remain stayed till the next date of hearing on November 27.

The JNU authorities had initiated the proctorial inquiry against Mr Yadav for protesting in the campus in February, which, the student had said, was launched for the rights of students in the reservation and seatcut issues. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union ( JNUSU) elections will be held on Friday.
