Sharifs sent back to jail after end of parole
■ Sharif, daughter, son- in- law were freed on parole to attend Kulsoom funeral
Pakistani authorities on Monday shifted incarcerated former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son- in- law Mohammed Safdar back to the Adiala jail.
The trio had been released on parole to attend the last rites of former first lady Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, who died on September 11 at a hospital in London.
Nawaz Sharif had met his mother earlier in the day at the Jati Umra residence of the Sharif family. The three were then escorted to the airport from where they were flown to Adiala via a special plane.
The Punjab Home Ministry said it did not receive any formal request from the Sharif family for parole extension.
Kulsoom Nawaz was laid to rest on Friday at Jati Umra, next to the resting place of her father- in- law Mian Mohammed Sharif and brother- in- law Abbas Sharif.
Her funeral prayers, led by religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil, were offered at Sharif Medical City, Raiwind.
Nawaz Sharif, his son- inlaw Mohammed Safdar along with party leaders and thousands of supporters attended the funeral. Delegations from other political parties were also in attendance.
Another funeral, led by Imam Imram Sheikh Khalifa Ezzat, was held in London’s Regent Park mosque on Thursday.
Family members and prominent political figures including Hussain Nawaz, Hassan Nawaz, former Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, former finance minister Ishaq Dar and Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had attended the last rituals of former first lady. Her Rasm- eQul ( congregational prayers) were offered on Sunday at Jati Umra.
Kulsoom Nawaz died at the age of 68, after losing to a long battle with cancer at London’s Harley Street Clinic on September 11.
She was born in 1950 in Lahore to a Kashmiri family. She attended Islamia College and graduated from Forman Christian College in Lahore. She also received a Master’s degree in Urdu from the University of the Punjab in 1970.
