BJP slams govt over bad state of transport system

■ Gupta says Kejri has failed to buy new buses

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta on Saturday blamed Arvind Kejriwal for further shattering the transport system in Delhi under his government’s rule.

According to Mr Gupta, the Aam Aadmi Party in its election manifesto had promised to add 5,000 new buses to fleet of public transport and in its first budget had increased this figure to 10,000 buses in the next five years but the minister, in a reply to a question asked in Vidhan Sabha said “there is no proposal to buy buses”.

“It is clear from the worsening transport system in Delhi and casual and irresponsible attitude of the Kejriwal government to improve the same that Aam Aadmi Party does not care for common man. Kejriwal government has no moral right to stay in power after failing to implement its one of the important electoral promises and should resign,” said Mr Gupta.

Mr Gupta claimed that in 2014, DTC had 5,216 buses in its fleet of public transport, which now has been reduced to 3,944, and about 80 per cent of the available buses have become old. “The result is that on an average, about 300 of these buses breakdown on the roads. Instead of increasing the number of buses, there is steady decrease and as a result, the people of Delhi are suffering. But Kejriwal government is least concerned about these problems,” Mr Gupta added.

Mr Gupta highlighted that based on the population of Delhi in February 2015, when AAP assumed office, there was requirement of 11,000 buses.

With the growing population and increase in number of people from other states settling in Delhi, the population is bound to rise. Here, it must be noted that in such conditions, the Delhi Master Plan 2021, is aiming to increase the share of public transport to 80 per cent.
