Jharkhand claim women’s 5- a- side title

Jharkhand defeated Haryana 2- 1 on penalties. The match was locked 4- 4 after regulation time.

Jharkhand defeated Haryana 2- 1 via the penalty shootout to lift the 3rd Hockey India women’s 5- a- side senior national championsh­ip in Bengaluru on Sunday.

The match was locked 4- 4 at regulation time.

In a keenly fought final, Haryana took a 2- 1 lead after the first seven minutes. However, Jharkhand turned around the situation and took a 4- 3 lead with just a minute remaining on the clock but could not hold on as Haryana scored a dramatic equaliser in the last minute to take the match into the penalties. Goals for Jharkhand were scored by Simta Ming ( 4th minute), Pramila Soreng ( 9th), Sima Kumari ( 17th) and Alka Dungdung ( 19th) while Gagandeep Kaur ( 6th), Amandeep Kaur ( 7th, 14th) and Manpreet Kaur ( 20th) scored for Haryana.

Alka Dungdung and Simta Ming held their nerves to score for Jharkhand in the shootout, while Sonika was the only player to convert for Haryana.

In the bronze medal match, Maharashtr­a beat Punjab 4- 1.

Maharashtr­a scored twice in the opening seven minutes for a two- goal lead but Punjab pulled one back in the 10th minute.

However, two more goals in the second period saw Maharastra secure the victory as Aishwarya Chavan ( 6th, 7th) and Preeti Dubey ( 14th, 15th) scored braces. Punjab’s skipper Reena Rani ( 10th) scored her team’s only goal.

Earlier in the day, defending champions Haryana scored a comfortabl­e 6- 1 win over Punjab in the first semi- final.

Amandeep Kaur ( 5th, 13th) scored twice in Haryana’s win while Poonam Rani ( 7th), Manpreet Kaur ( 9th), Gagandeep Kaur ( 10th) and Sonika ( 12th) scored a goal each while Reena Rani ( 19th) scored Punjab’s lone goal. In the second semi- final, Maharashtr­a lost to Jharkhand 2- 3. Preeti Dubey ( 7th), and Sanggai Ibemhal ( 13th) scored for Maharashtr­a while Pramila Soreng ( 10th), Pinki Ekka ( 15th) and Birajini Ekka ( 18th) scored a goal each for the winning team.
