Understand value of life

- DR REKHA SHETTY The writer is the author of Everyday Happiness Mantras

Violent deaths range from murder, war, terrorist attacks and traffic accidents. But do you know that the highest number of violent deaths are caused by suicide? It is the 13th leading cause of death. Life is a gift. Imagine 3,000 people commit suicide every day!

Over 17 per cent of the world’s suicides happen in India. Imagine the terrible emotional impact on those who love them and the societies they live in. It is estimated that over a hundred people are impacted by the suicide of one person. Suicide rates are higher in the South and East. Tamil Nadu and Kerala have the highest rate of suicides, even though they are the most developed states in the country.

The reasons for these suicides are poverty and unemployment to start with. Each one of us can do something about these reasons. It is also caused by loss of a loved one, legal and work related problems or loss of ‘ honour’ in the community. While more women attempt suicide, more men succeed in committing it. Sadly, suicide is the most common cause of death among young people between the ages 15 and 24. Imagine the amount of resources lost, when we lose them.

What can each of us do to save lives? Be aware of mental changes in yourself and those close to you. Depression is often undiagnosed and rarely treated. Seek help.

Be a mentor to young people. Become aware of abuse, exploitation, mistreatment around you and do not turn a blind eye to it. Feelings of pain and hopelessness lead to the slippery slope of suicide.

Invest in self- care and happiness. Remember real happiness comes from helping others.

Create a circle of safety through a network of caring people.
