DCW chief raps DTC, asks why marshals not deployed

Seeks details of progress made in installati­on of CCTV cameras in buses

The transport commission­er has been asked to provide details on issues of harrasment and steps taken by him for deployment of CCTV and marshals in buses

Taking cognizance of reports regarding rampant eve- teasing and harassment on DTC buses, the Delhi Commission for Women ( DCW) asked the DTC why the decision to deploy marshals in buses has not been implemente­d yet.

Issuing a notice to the corporatio­n, the commission has also asked the transport commission­er to provide details of the progress made in installing CCTV cameras in the buses. The DCW said several women and girls across Delhi face harassment in the buses on a daily basis.

Citing a case of a college student who faced extreme harassment on DTC route no. 544, due to which she had to jump off the

bus. The DCW in its notice asked the reason behind non- deployment of marshals in the buses and non- installati­on of CCTV cameras.

The DCW has set- up an inquiry into the matter and issued a notice to the Secretary- cum- Commission­er, Department of Transport, Delhi government and Delhi police.

Further, other issues such as lack of an adequate number of buses especially during rush hours, lack of an adequate number of women- only buses on requisite routes were also highlighte­d.

The transport commission­er has been asked to provide details on these issues such as reasons for the lapses, steps taken by the commission­er for deployment of marshals in DTC buses and installati­on of CCTV cameras.
