Punjab, Manipur schools qualify for next round

Punjab’s Nankana Sahib Public School and Nongchup Imphal Sagoltonga Hogh School qualified for the Super League of the 25th Nehru Hockey tournament for girls ( Under- 17) at the Shivaji Stadium in the capital on Friday.

Nankana Sahib Public School defeated 2- 0 Chattisgar­h’s Shri Guru Nanak Senior Secondary School in a Group F match.

They led 1- 0 at halftime through Taranpreet Singh’s penalty corner conversion in the 10th minute. Singh then scored her second, a field goal, in the 57th minute to complete a comfortabl­e outing for her team. He was named the best player of the match.

Nankana Sahib Public School thrashed Goa’s St Anthony’s High School 7- 1 in Group D.

The match was tied 1- 1. Tanbu Shorensang­am put the Manipur school ahead in the 21st minute. Seena Navalgond responded for the Goa school in the 33rd minute.

The Manipur school then took complete control of the match after the change of ends, scoring in the 47th, 51st, 53rd, 55th, 60th, 69th minutes.

Aiiyingbi Chanu was declared player of the match for her brace.

In a Group B match, West Bengal’s Mallickpur Girls High School registered a 2- 0 victory over Punjab High School.

Soma Purkait scored both the goals ( 56th, 66th) to walk away with the player of the match award.
