Motivation, goal and how to hit the bull’s eye

-

Motivation to achieve a goal makes it an important part of our life. Right from getting up in the morning to the end of the day, goals are set for the day and attempts made to achieve them. Depending on the priorities, situations and expectations, we plan short- term as well as long- term objectives.

Motivation or lack of motivation determines turning a goal into a reality. Exercising is one of the commonest aims in all our life. We do think a lot about having a healthy lifestyle and including fitness in our regime. But how many of us actually follow this? Well, you all know the answer.

Exercising regularly requires a great deal of motivation. Choose exercises that target multiple joints and muscles in the body, e. g. pushups and burpees.

You have to be smart and use a simple formula called SMART principle.

SPECIFIC GOALS: What do you exactly want to do? Consider making a list of exercises that you think are more relevant. For example, aim towards achieving a goal of 30 pushups and 30 burpees in 6 weeks.

MEASURABLE GOALS: How can the effect of a goal be measured? While doing push- ups how far down you are able to reach, whether the body is held straight, how many repetitions can you perform, etc. If you started with wall pushups and now doing floor pushups, it is a measurable parameter.

ATTAINABLE GOALS: Whether the goal is attainable depends on the time and effort required. Your physical fitness level, availability of time and efficiency may be decisive factors to start and then progress the exercises. If you are a sedentary person who has never done any exercise, then starting with wall push- ups or practising various components of burpees separately will be more fruitful initially.

RELEVANT GOALS: Relevance of a goal makes it more meaningful. The exercises that you selected should serve the purpose of building up strength, endurance, weight loss or increasing the general fitness level.

TIME- BASED GOALS: Making goals time- bound will motivate you to stick to the plan and progress the activity accordingly. But avoid pushing too hard in order to maintain the timeline, so that you do not become sore or get injured and ultimately lose the motivation to continue the exercise.

To conclude, consider your physical strength, choose exercises specific to your goal and hold your motivation high so that you stay in the pink of health.
