Ronaldo scores in Juve’s easy win

Sarri’s side Chelsea continue their fine run as they blank Southampton 3- 0

Southampton ( United Kingdom), Oct. 7: Maurizio Sarri has got little wrong in the three months since he was appointed Chelsea head coach and the Italian was in credit again after starting Ross Barkley in a 3- 0 Premier League victory at Southampton on Sunday.

Barkley has operated largely as understudy to Mateo Kovacic in recent weeks but, having been selected ahead of the onloan Real Madrid man, the England international responded by setting up Eden Hazard’s 30th- minute opening goal before adding the second — his first for the club — just before the hour.

Alvaro Morata came off the bench to complete the win at St Mary’s in added time.

Hazard’s goal was his eighth of the season, seven of which have come in Chelsea’s opening eight Premier League games, and continued his outstanding form since Sarri succeeded Antonio Conte as Blues boss in July.

But Barkley’s performance was also a major factor in Chelsea’s victory that ensured they maintained the pressure at the top of the Premier League immediately before fellow title- contenders Liverpool and Manchester City met at Anfield.

This was only Barkley’s fifth league start since his 15- million ($ 20 million, 17 million euros) transfer from Everton in January, a move that had been put on hold from the previous August while the player continued his recovery from a serious hamstring injury.

Meanwhile on Saturday, Jose Mourinho was given a stay of execution as Manchester United staged a stirring fightback to beat Newcastle 3- 2 thanks to Alexis Sanchez’s last- gasp winner

Mourinho had presided over United’s worst sevengame start to a season for 29 years amid the breakdown of his relationship with star midfielder Paul Pogba and several other key players.

A winless Newcastle raced into a two- goal in the first 10 minutes at Old Trafford.

But United clicked into gear and Chile forward Sanchez, who had been dropped by Mourinho, came off the bench to bag the winner after goals from Juan Mata and Anthony Martial dragged the hosts level.

This was a much needed win for United. Udine ( Italy), Oct. 7: Cristiano Ronaldo’s form doesn’t appear affected by a lawsuit accusing him of rape.

Ronaldo scored Juventus’ second goal in a 2- 0 win at Udinese to extend the Bianconeri’s perfect start in Serie ‘ A’ on Saturday.

Shortly before the break, Ronaldo blasted a powerful shot from 10 yards past Udinese goalkeeper Simone Scuffet.

Immediately after scoring, Ronaldo signaled for his teammates to give him some space so he could go celebrate in front of a TV camera, leaping into the air with an emphatic double fist pump.

The goal was met by a mix of applause and boos inside Dacia Arena.

Kathryn Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit last week in the U. S. saying she was raped by Ronaldo in Las Vegas in 2009. Police have also re- opened an investigation. Ronaldo has denied the accusation.

Rodrigo Betancur gave Juventus the lead four minutes earlier with a header that was confirmed by the VAR due to a possible offside.

Ronaldo also was involved in other chances, using his trademark stepover moves to befuddle defenders.

Also, Juve’s Joao Cancelo hit the crossbar in the closing minutes.

Juventus moved nine points clear of Napoli, which hosts Sassuolo on Sunday.

Roma won at Empoli 2- 0 for its fourth straight victory in all competitions.

Steven Nzonzi and Edin Dzeko scored while Empoli missed a penalty.

Cagliari beat Bologna 2- 0 with goals from Joao Pedro and Leonardo Pavoletti. Portugal pm defends Cr7 Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has spoken out in defence of soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been embroiled in a rape accusation.

Speaking to television on the Spanish island of Lanzarote on Saturday, Costa made an appeal to the presumption of innocence, as well as Ronaldo’s successful career.

“It is not enough for someone to be accused of something to be guilty of it.”

Costa added: “If there’s something we have proof of is that he is an extraordinary professional, an extraordinary sportsman, an extraordinary footballer, and someone who has honored and given prestige to Portugal, and certainly what we all wish for is that nothing can ever stain that record of Ronaldo.”
