The Delhi government on Saturday said that it was not informed either about the foundation laying ceremony or the inauguration of the skywalk at ITO by the Centre.

The government said that it had no problem if the Centre continues with its inauguration ceremonies as long as it does not create hurdles in the work of the city government.

“These ceremonies, however, are not important for us, since the people of Delhi had elected their government with a historic mandate in February 2015 with great hopes. We are answerable and accountable to the people who had reposed great faith in us.

“We will be happy in case the Central government and its nominated representatives continue with the inauguration ceremonies and allow the elected Delhi government to work for public welfare without hindrances,” PWD minister Satyendar Jain said.

Mr Jain’s made the comments in a statement issued by the city government on the day the construction work along with the decoration of the skywalk was completed on Saturday.

The skywalk at the busy ITO intersection was conceived in 2006- 07, along with a footover bridge, as part of preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, however it was shelved with the DUAC ( Delhi Urban Art Commission) rejecting the design.

In 2013- 14, the PWD initiated a fresh proposal separating the flyover from the FoB, and proposed construction of a FoB at ITO in the wake of pedestrians’ deaths while crossing the busy ITO traffic intersections.
