Emulate Patel’s ideals, exhorts President

New Delhi: The nation today observed the 93rd birth anniversar­y of Sardar Vallabhbha­i Patel.

In the capital the anniversar­y celebratio­ns started with the garlanding of the Sardar’s statue in Parliament street by Chief of Army Staff Gen. P. P. Kumaramang­alam this morning.

Speaking on the occasion, Gen. Kumaramang­alam said the life and ideals of Sardar Patel could provide the country light for solving the present problems.

At a function at the Red Fort, President Zakir Husain called upon the people to take a solemn pledge to work for the unity of the country and pay a fitting homage to Sardar Patel.

He said he had learnt one thing from the Sardar and that was work.

Glowing tributes to the “Iron man of India”, and “Architect of Indian unity”, were paid also by home minister Y. B. Chavan, mayor Hansraj Gupta, Lt. Gov. A. N. Jha, Jana Sangh chief Atal Behari Vajpayee, Union minister Karan Singh, Dahyabhai Patel, Prakash Vir Shastri and Kanwarlal Gupta, chairman of the citizens’ council.

Bombay: S. K. Patil, former Union minister, today said the late Sardar Patel had the “sixth sense” of spotting the right man for the right job and then totally relying on him to deliver the goods.

Mr Patil was broadcasti­ng from the Bombay station of All India Radio on the occasion of the 93rd birth anniversar­y of Sardar, he said. Jersey bulls and pigs gift by Ireland Hyderabad: Ten Jersey bulls and 120 exotic pigs offered by the Irish people through the good offices of Rev. R. G. Livingston­e, director Medak Agricultur­al Centre, has been accepted by the government of Andhra Pradesh.

These animals would be arriving by a special chartered K. L. M. Airlines to Hyderabad at 11.00 pm on November 2. These livestock would be received by P. Thimma Reddy, minister for agricultur­e and animal husbandry and C. Krishna Rao, director of animal husbandry.

These Jersey bulls would be stationed at the various livestock farms and semen banks in the state and will be utilised for artificial inseminati­on to upgrade the local cattle for milk production.

The exotic pigs would be stationed at the Bacon factory, Gannavaram.
