‘ Foul’ Delhi air: Ban on entry of heavy vehicles proposed

New Delhi: A day ahead of Diwali, Delhi’s air quality was recorded in the “very poor” category as winds continued to blow from regions where there is rampant stubble burning even as pollution watchdog CPCB recommende­d a ban on entry of heavy vehicles into the city from November 8- 10. Twenty- five areas in Delhi recorded “very poor” quality air, while eight areas recorded “poor” air quality. Experts have warned of severe spike in pollution levels after Diwali even if “partial toxic crackers” are burnt compared to last year. To address the air pollution situation, the Central Pollution Control Board ( CPCB) said it was mulling inducing artificial rain over the city after Diwali to wash away hazardous pollutants plaguing the national capital.

A man, supposed to be in his mid 20s, set around 18 vehicles on fire in South Delhi’s Madangir area, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday. Later, a video of the incident went viral.

At around 3.05 am on Tuesday, police received informatio­n regarding an incident where a man set 18 vehicles on fire. After reaching the spot, police doused the fire. The accused is on the run and police is looking for him, said a senior police officer.

According to police, 14 two- wheelers and 4 cars were set on fire.

Among the burned vehicles, eight two- wheelers and two cars were gutted completely while six motorcycle­s and two cars burned partially, the officer said.

six motorcycle­s, following which a lot of petrol dribbled from the tank. When he lit the matchstick, the cars parked nearby also caught fire.

According to police, the accused was seen to be in a drunken state in the video.

When the police rushed to the spot, it looked for him for a long time. It was supposed that the accused would be roaming in the nearby areas, the police said. A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the IPC.
