Richard Nixon elected as 37th President on US

New York: Republican Richard Nixon was today elected to be the 37th President of the United States of America.

A jubilant Nixon acknowledg­ed his victory in the elections and thanked his Democratic opponent for conceding.

Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey conceded victory to Mr Nixon on the basis of unofficial returns.

He pledged he would give Mr Nixon his support in unifying the country.

President- elect Richard Nixon, wearing a broad victory smile, and his arms upraised in a characteri­stic gesture, thanked his campaign workers today and said he hoped “We’ll be worthy.”

Mr Nixon praised his defeated opponent. VicePresid­ent Hubert Humphrey, saving “he never gave up.” He said that in a telephone conversati­on with Mr. Humphrey, be told the the VicePresid­ent: “I know how it is to lose a close one.”

Mr Nixon said his would be “An open administra­tion, open to new ideas.”

“We want to bridge the generation gap.”

The President- elect continued, saying he was confident about the task.

Mr Nixon said he wanted to tell Mr Humphrey and his campaign workers that “The important thing is that our process in this country works better with people giving their all to a cause they believe in.”
