Pollution: A new trendsetter in Delhi’s fashion industry

-

The raging sun, the suffocating dust or the odorous water— these have become a part of what we call a Delhi lifestyle. But all hail to the pollution, there are now newborn babies in the fashion industry known as pollution resistant fashion apparel. Once what had been means of necessity, now has become the key to showcasing style. Designer wear along with designer accessories are made keeping in mind the global pollution level, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t look top- notch.

When asked how the trend has set in and influenced the daily lives of Delhites, designer Ashima Sharma shares her opinion, “Anti- pollution styles like wearing a headscarves, gloves and using umbrellas are a common view. People, especially women don this style with so much gusto and is now these are indeed a trending fashion.” Talking about the new designs that make these accessories a trend, Ashima says, “Women do consider colour, fabric, embellishment and also different ways of tying the scarf. All these are leading to a fashion statement. When we say umbrellas, we think about the monsoon, but they are also used as a protection against pollution and so girls are opting for various colours to flaunt. We can even see square shaped umbrellas on the roads that are slowly making its way into the fashion world. There is no doubt that people have accepted these small accessories not only to protect themselves from pollution, but also make them look presentable and stylish.”

A few years ago, bikers would cover themselves top to bottom so that they are not directly affected by the heat and the dust. When one talks about pollution as a trendsetter, the designer apparel and accessories for men cannot be neglected.

Delhi based designer Bandana Sondhi clarifies, “Fashion has this incredible aspect to it of adapting to what the need of the hour is. Unfortunately pollution is here to stay. People across the world are trying to combat this by adopting all sorts of protective measures including wearing protective clothing and accessories like scarves, gloves, socks and masks.” But protection is not what it is all about. She adds, “Fashion has identified the demand for the same and merged with it to help people actually enjoy wearing all of the above and make a style statement at the same time. A choice of interesting colours, design element and fabrics used makes it now more interesting for people and actually ensures people protect themselves.”
