Mamata vs Modi: Didi backed by one and all

■ CBI was stopped from questioning Kolkata police chief

-

Support has been pouring in from Congress to AAP, DMK and TDP in the south, for Mamata Banerjee after an all- out war broke out between the Centre and the West Bengal government over the CBI’s attempt to question Kolkata police commissioner in connection with chit fund scams.

The CBI moved the Supreme Court accusing Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar of destroying evidence related to the case and indulging in contempt of court.

Sources said that the vengeance was a result of the recent Kolkata rally success .

Feisty Banerjee has long been known for being an agitator. Banerjee’s dharna brought back memories of the 26- day hunger strike she undertook 13 years ago against “forcible” land acquisition in Singur by the then Left Front government for Tata Motors’ Nano car plant.

Her 46- hour dharna underscored how crucial she is for the Opposition’s efforts to forge a broad- based alliance to take on the Modi dispensation.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Kolkata police commissioner to appear and make himself available at all times before the CBI and co- operate faithfully with the probe into the Saradha scam.

To avoid controversy, the court asked the CBI to question Kumar at a neutral place, viz Shillong in Meghalaya on such dates as may be fixed.

Calling off her sit- in protest following a “favourable” SC order, Banerjee claimed moral victory. “I will not give up.... Modi

hatao, desh bachao ( oust Modi, save the country. The dharna is a victory of the people, of the country,

of democracy. I will now take the fight to Delhi,” she told a gathering of her supporters with Andhra

Pradesh Minister by her side.
