Rohan Gupta is Cong’s new social media head

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

The Congress on Saturday appointed Rohan Gupta, its national media coordinator, as the head of its social media team. The social media team was headless after its former chief, MP and actress Divya Spandana, virtually made a vanishing act after the party was trounced in the general elections this year. Mr Gupta was also managing the publicity of the party during the recently concluded general elections. The appointment comes after a gap of three months as the post of the head of social media was vacant after Ms Divya had decided to leave. Mr. Gupta, who belongs to Ahmedabad, had played a key role as in-charge of the party’s social media campaign for previous Assembly elections in Gujarat.

The sudden exit of Ms Divya had caused quite a flutter in party circles as she completely deleted her online presence. She had shot into limelight in mid 2017 when she came on the scene to romp up the social media team of the Congress. Then Congress president Rahul Gandhi was travelling to the United States in an outreach programme. She ensured that the visit got traction on social media. In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections too, the Congress aggressively took on the BJP as far as activity on the social media was concerned. Interestingly, in late 2018, Ms Divya deleted her profile from Twitter that mentioned her as the head of social media of the party. Insiders claim that due to internal party differences, she was feeling sidelined. Her complete disappearance after the Lok Sabha Polls was also a result of the party’s internal differences.
