New Delhi: In a fresh trouble for Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, the CBI is contemplat­ing seeking clarificat­ion from him in connection with the agency’s fresh FIR registered on Monday to probe alleged illegal sand mining in Saharanpur.

Mr Yadav, who was the chief minister of the state between 2012 and 2017, held the mining portfolio during 2012-13.

The CBI has booked 12 people, including two senior IAS officers serving as secretarie­s in the UP government.

“There are allegation­s these bureaucrat­s, in conspiracy with other accused, allowed illegal mining of minor minerals in UP’s Saharanpur and Hamirpur districts during 2012-17. Mr Yadav, the then mining minister had allegedly cleared 14 leases pertaining to mining in the state, of which 13 were cleared on February 17, 2013, in violation of the e-tendering process,” sources said.

After interrogat­ing accused bureaucrat­s, the agency will certainly seek clarificat­ion from the then mining minister (Mr Yadav), they added. The CBI on Tuesday conducted searches in Uttarakhan­d and UP after registerin­g the fresh FIR. Lucknow, Oct. 2: A special 36-hour session in both the houses of the Uttar Pradesh legislatur­e to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversar­y began on Wednesday amid boycott by the Opposition prompting chief minister Yogi Adityanath to say that this is not only an “insult” to the Father of the Nation but also a “contempt” of the House.

Setting the proceeding­s in motion, Speaker of the Legislativ­e Assembly Hriday Narain Dixit said such a session was never held in parliament­ary history. “It’s unfortunat­e that opposition leaders, who agreed for the session, are not present. Probably they did not remember that they had given consent for the session,” he said.

Only members of the BJP and its ally Apna Dal were present. The simultaneo­us sessions of the Assembly and Legislativ­e Council begun at 11 am and will continue till Thursday night without a break.
