WB BJP prez’s remarks on women sparks controversy

- RAJIB CHOWDHURI

Triggering controversy once again, West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh on Sunday claimed that young women are “being drugged and drawn in movements which have resulted in ignorance of culture and self-esteem by them.”

He even argued that such women fall prey to violence for their indecent behaviour.

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim condemned the Midnapore BJP MP’s comments. Asking the state BJP chief if he takes drugs, the Trinamul Congress minister called the people to boycott him.

On the vulgar distortion of a Rabindrasangeet by a group of students at Rabindra Bharati University during Basanta Utsob (Spring Festival) celebration Mr Ghosh said, “The little girls are behaving indecently. They also campaigning it. It is very unfortunate. I am not blaming anyone. It is social decay.”

He reasoned, “A destructive movement has been underway for a few days. Young women are getting drugged to take part in movement sitting on the front. They are shouting for the whole day. As a result, they have forgotten our culture, good and bad and even their self-esteem. So all of us including the school and college authorities and guardians and education minister has a responsibility.”

Mr Ghosh added, “We need to think where our society is heading to. If these women behave on the road like this, what treatment will they get from the public? They will become victims of violence.”

Mr Hakim, however, said, “He is uncivilised and barbaric. He can not live in a civilised society. The way he talks about women taking drugs, it has posed a question of whether he is on drugs or not.”
