Acid attack victims celebrate Women’s Day
Acid attack victims shared tales of courage and resilience as they joined nearly 300 women and transgenders on Sunday to mark the occasion of International Women’s Day (IWD) at an event held in South Delhi.
“Fighting bias needs determination and courage. Women don’t need any help as they can help themselves,” said Shaily (32), an acid attack victim honoured by NGO Aarohan which organised the function in Malviya Nagar.
Farhana (30), another acid attack victim, shared tips on self-defence with girls from government schools, their mothers, and women from self-help groups.
Aarohan’s founder-president Rani Patel said a demonstration on hygiene was also held to keep coronavirus away. “By empowering women and girls through literacy, we can equip them to realise their potential and fight social bias,” said Ms Patel.
MLA Somnath Bharti and area municipal councillor Nandini Sharma called for precaution and cleanliness to collectively fight coronavirus.
Achievers honoured at the function included actress Sanjana Sanghi, Kabeer Advani, Manju Khatri, and policewomen from the office of DCP (South), Hauz Khas, and Malviya Nagar police station.
Ms Patel said girl students associated with Aarohan presented a play urging women to stop being silent sufferers and raise their voice against sexual crimes. The Delhi police staff also informed women about using the Himmat women safety mobile phone application for safety.
