India: 10 fresh cases in 24 hours, total 60

The number of novel coronaviru­s (COVID-19) cases in India continues to rise steadily. On Wednesday, with 10 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of positive cases of COVID-19 in India now stands at 60. Among the 10 new cases, eight are from Kerala, one from Rajasthan and one from Delhi.

The 60 cases include three cases from Kerala who were discharged earlier and 16 Italians.

However, as per state health officials, the number of confirmed cases maybe up to 65.

As the infection continued to spread its tentacles in the country, state government­s and UTs’ took number of initiative­s to check and prevent the spread of the infection.

While Jammu & Kashmir administra­tion ordered closure of primary schools and aganwadi centres in five districts of Jammu and shutting down of cinema halls across the region till 31 March as a precaution­ary measure, Karnataka government issued temporary regulation which asked all government and private hospitals to have flu corners for screening of suspected cases of COVID19. The Karnataka government also started a campaign called “Namaste over Handshake” that encourages people to greet in the traditiona­l Indian style, to tackle the spread of the virus.

Delhi has five positive cases in total, while nine people were diagnosed with the infection in Uttar Pradesh. Karnataka and Maharashtr­a have reported four and two confirmed cases of COVID-19 respective­ly. Ladakh has recorded two positive cases. Rajasthan, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab have reported one case each, union health ministry said. Kerala has till now reported nine cases, which includes the three patients who were discharged last month following recovery.

The fresh case in Rajasthan is of 85-yearold man in Jaipur who had returned from Dubai on February 28, state government officials said. In Goa, a 27year-old man from Goa, who travelled to Italy and Finland last month and came in contact with a coronaviru­s patient is being kept in an isolation ward of a state-run hospital after he complained of cough and fever, Goa health minister Vishwajit Rane said.

The Dell employee had returned from the US, including a visit to Texas while the Mindtree employee also had a travel history abroad, the two companies said in separate statements.

Kerala government has sent at least 45 people who returned to the state from COVID-19 hit Italy to various health facilities, official sources said. While 35 people, including two children and two pregnant women, have been shifted to a government district hospital in Aluva, 10 people suffering from fever and breathing problems have been admitted to the Kalamasser­y Medical College Hospital. Samples collected from them have been sent to the National Institute of Virology lab in Alappuzha, state health officials said.
