BMW drives in new locally made X1 SUV to grow luxury market

BMW, India’s second biggest luxury car maker, has introduced its entry level mid-life facelift of the BMW X1 SUV priced at Rs 35.90 lakh to Rs 42.90 lakh at pan India showroom to grow and expand its leadership in the entry level luxury car market in the country.

Its upcoming rivals such as new second generation Audi Q3 and the new second generation Mercedes GLA will also be launched in India later this year.

The new BMW X1 is offered in a range of three trims: SportX, xLine and M Sport.

The top-spec BMW X1 M Sport in diesel engine is priced at Rs 42.90 lakh. The mid-spec ‘xLine' variant of the new X1 SUV is offered with both petrol and diesel engine options, while the entry-level ‘SportX' is offered with just the petrol engine.

“The BMW X1 has establishe­d and owned the dominant position in the premium compact SUV segment in India,” Rudratej Singh, President & CEO, BMW Group India told Financial Chronicle.

He said 30 per cent of the total BMW sales come from X1, which is a volume grosser, selling over 20,000 units in India in 10 years.

“The X1 fits in perfectly with the attitude and lifestyle of modern ambitious future leaders who are redefining success personally and profession­ally,”

Singh said. And owning the X1 only adds more thrill to their successful lives, he said. The new BMW X1 is powered by the BS6-compliant 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines. The updated 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine produces 192bhp and 280Nm of torque while the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine churns out 190bhp and 400Nm of torque.

Other features on the new BMW X1 include wireless charging, smartphone connectivi­ty with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ambient lighting, keyless entry, panoramic sunroof, and pushbutton start and climate control, among others.

The safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, traction control, tyre pressure monitoring system and rearview camera.
