The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), on Tuesday, alleged that the Left-led JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) defaced the V.D. Savarkar Marg signboard inside the campus.

The students’ Union had objected to a road inside the campus being named after Hindutva ideologue V.D. Savarkar.

“The JNU administration, last year, took the decision to name the roads inside the campus and as a result the road to the Subansiri Hostel was named after V.D. Savarkar. However, the Left-wing students defaced it by pasting a Mohammad Ali Jinnah Marg poster,” said Shivam Chaurasia, the president of ABVP-JNU.

There was no immediate reaction from the administration or the students’ Union.

A 23-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his distant relative, with whom he was in a relationship, after a quarrel in Uttar Pradesh, the police said on Tuesday.

The accused has been identified as Heera Singh, a resident of Nainital district in Uttarakhand, it said.

On February 9, the complainant lodged a missing report of his 23-year-old niece who used to live in Madangir. The woman had been missing since February 5, the police said. The complainant alleged that the woman was working as a pharmacist at a hospital in Delhi and had a friend, accused Singh, who was also a pharmacist and a distant maternal uncle of the woman, a senior police officer said. During investigation, it was revealed that Singh and the woman had planned to marry each other, but their families were against it, the police said.

“On February 6, the body of a woman was found at Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh. The deceased was identified as missing woman. On Monday, the police traced Singh’s location and arrested him,” DCP (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said.

During interrogation, Singh disclosed that he was in a relationship with the victim since 2017. On February 5, at around 8.15 pm, Singh went to her house in Madangir. When he reached there, a quarrel ensued between them regarding marriage, the DCP said.

Later, they left the room and went to Anand Vihar, following which they boarded a bus and reached Rampur at around 4.30 am, he said. An alteration started between them in Rampur and Singh slapped her. Later, he took a brick and hit her.
