In a shocking incident, a woman abandoned her 15day-old daughter at the Shahdara Metro Station on Friday. A woman passenger brought the infant to the security checkpoint and informed that a woman had handed over the child to a beggar at main entrance gate of the station.

Later, Delhi police handed over the girl to Palna, an NGO working for the welfare of underprivileged children. The girl was suffering from minor infections and was also covered in dirt when she was handed over to the NGO. Now her condition is stable. The police have registered a case and searching for her parents.

“On Friday (March 13) at about 3:25 pm, a lady passenger who was a resident of Nand Nagri, Delhi, brought an infant, aged about 15 days old, to Security Check Point and informed the CISF officials who were deployed there that someone handed over the child to a beggar at main entrance gate of metro station and went away by saying that she would come after sometime but she did not return,” said a CISF official.

“She was brought to station control room along with the child. Delhi Metro Rail Police was

● informed about the matter by the station controller official. Soon after getting the information, police reached the spot and enquired. However, when the matter was investigated, it was found that the area where the girl was abandoned, does not fall under CCTV coverage, where the lady passenger handed over the child to beggar,” said the official.

Later, police took the child to Shastri Park metro police station and an FIR under the section of 317 IPC was registered. The girl was handed over to Palna Child Help Centre, Civil Line. The police were still in the dark about who might have abandoned the baby. “We are investigating the matter and trying to find out her parents,” said the police.

The girl child is now in a healthy condition and the police are trying to find out her parents, if her parents cannot be traced than we will start the adoption process for her to find a new house as per the law, said an official of Palna.
