Let the music play

NO DOUBT, FASHION AND MUSIC GO HAND-IN-HAND. WE HAVE SINGLED OUT EXAMPLES OF HOW THE MUSIC INDUSTRY HAS BEEN AN INFLUENCE ON THE FASHION INDUSTRY

- NIVI SHRIVASTAVA

As pop artists are the flavour of the season at award nights and new album releases, we can’t help but notice the rise of hip-hopinspired haute couture this season. In Hollywood, pop artists like Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Zayn Malik,

PLAY IT COOL:

Popular culture has a huge influence in directing consumer choices; no doubt that music and fashion are deeply intertwined and play off each other's energy. Designer Hemant Sagar of Genes Lecoanet Hemant, recommends ‘going wild’ and mixing individualistic approach to functionality for a whimsical touch of fancy. He says, “Channel your musical mood through relaxed pants in luxe knits, bomber jackets, over-sized chic tees, sneakers that ooze comfort and have a dynamic mix of prints and textures. The focus is on utilitarian details — think metallic buckles, accessorized caps and bags — a nod to a brutalist industrial aesthetic.” Whereas, designer Bhaavya Bhatnagar refers to the rise of the athleisure trend among artists for the popularity of statement looks in this category. Bhaavya mentions, “Oversized Bombers, patch-worked denim jackets, joggers, crop tops and sweatshirts are all being seen in music videos and real life. Oversized, boxy pieces with evocative text and embroideries make a statement on and off-screen. Neon has been very popular lately, especially chartreuse and orange. Blacks with powerful embellishments like spikes, gunmetal trims and chains make for bold looks.”

SERENADE WITH STYLE

There are tons of different genres of music, much like there are tons of different style vibes to choose from in fashion. When fashion and music combine, great things happen, opine fashion experts and founders of Postfold Ashish Gurnani and Aashray Thatai. “Music, like fashion, is all about creativity and expressing yourself. Music lovers like to wear easy t-shirts and for a rock chic look don round neck tees with a jacket. Invest in a denim jacket with details such as embroidery, oversized or with accented sleeves. Even Rihanna and Taylor Swift approve of this trend! Oversized chains are a staple to rappers for decades and are in this season too. Not just as jewelry but also on bags and shoes as an accent. A hip way to sport this trend would be to wear an oversized cross-body chain bag with an A-line Dress and chunky sneakers.”

Music lovers love to stand out but they also prefer something comfortable and easy going. According to fashion expert Tina Walia, oversized hoodies, baggy pants, heels and neon details in loose clothing are some peculiar styles in pop lifestyle. She shares some styling ideas and says, “To have fun with your look, try pairing a crochet top paired with a sheer skirt, teamed with sunglasses and bag with fringe details. If you are heading for a concert, just add gladiator sandals or sneakers to complete the look. Opt for loose tees printed with headlines to express your choice of music, club it with utility pants/denim and accessorize with chains and block heels. If you prefer casual, pick an oversized crop top and layer it with a denim jacket, shorts and long gladiator sandals or shimmery shoes for a musical night out.”

Lopez, Shakira, and Beyonce are the iconic trendsetters, who have created their signature looks on and off the red carpet. While back home in India, we see frontrunners like Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Disha Patani, Ayushmann Khurrana, Nora Fatehi and Rajkumar Rao wooing their fans in offbeat but spectacularly styled outfits inspired by music lifestyle.
