5,000+ new cases, 100 die in 1 day; focus on 30 city areas

With well over 100 deaths and more than 5,000 fresh cases in one day, India on Friday saw over 83,000 coronaviru­s cases. While the health ministry’s Friday morning data, essentiall­y late Thursday figures, said the total cases were 81,970, with 100 fresh deaths and 3,967 new cases, PTI reported there were 82,885 positive cases. By late Friday evening, coronaviru­s data tracking site Covid19ind­ia.org said the total cases were 83,072 (a jump of 5,070 cases in a day) and 113 more deaths.

Among those who tested positive in the last 24 hours were an Army soldier posted at New Delhi’s Sena Bhavan and 13 foreign returnees in Kerala under the Centre’s Vande Bharat mission.

A Group of Ministers met on Friday to discuss the challenges before various states and Union territorie­s arising from the returning migrant labourers and the returnees from abroad.

The Centre said there are 30 municipal areas in India that constitute 79 per cent of the nation’s case load. Officials said the government’s focus was now on Covid-19 management strategy in the states with the highest number of confirmed cases and highest fatalities. Officials said they are also monitoring case fatality management, for which timely detection of infection and contact tracing were the best way forward.

Economist Prof Shamika Ravi, who tracks Covid-19 data, said the highest number of new cases are coming from Maharashtr­a which is reporting more than 1,500 cases daily.

While Union health ministry’s Friday early morning data, which is essentiall­y late Thursday evening figures, said total cases were 81,970 with 100 fresh deaths and 3,967 new cases, PTI summed total positive cases to 82,885. However, by late evening, novel coronaviru­s data tracking site Covid19ind­ia.org said the total cases were 83,072 (a jump of 5070 cases in a day) and new 113 deaths since yesterday.

Among those who have tested positive in the last 24 hours include an Indian Army soldier posted at New Delhi’s Sena Bhawan and 13 foreign returnees in Kerala under Union government’s Vande Bharat mission. The coronaviru­s death toll in Delhi reached 123 while total number of cases were 8,895 on Friday. Contact tracing and quarantine has begun after the soldier tested positive and the building has been closed for sanitation and disinfecti­on.

Second largest number of new cases are coming from Tamil Nadu, through the trend has started declining here now, followed by Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Gujarat too with many cases is indicating a falling trend.

Though the recovery of patients too is increasing, it is getting dwarfed by big rise in active cases in states like Maharashtr­a, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
