Trinamul’s Nusrat skips PM meet as hubby not allowed

Actor-turned-Trinamul Congress MP of Basirhat, Nusrat Jahan allegedly skipped Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting in anger on Cyclone Amphan’s devastatio­n with West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday at her own Lok Sabha constituen­cy in North 24 Parganas after her husband Nikhil Jain was not allowed by the Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel to accompany her to the meeting.

Undertakin­g an aerial survey of two worst affected districts, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas with the CM, the PM had landed in a chopper at a helipad temporaril­y built near the venue of the meeting at Basirhat College as 21 people lost their lives during the deadly cyclone. Union ministers Babul Supriyo and Deboshree Chaudhuri welcomed Mr Modi. Meanwhile Nusrat and Nikhil alongwith their two personal assistants also went to the venue.

The SPG personnel stopped them. When Nusrat introduced herself as a local MP, she was allowed to go inside to attend the meeting. But Nikhil and the two PAs were not allowed. Finding her husband outside, Nusrat confronted the SPG personnel introducin­g Nikhil as her husband, according to sources. The SPG personnel however clearly told her that only she, being the local MP, was allowed.

Furious, Nusrat left the venue with Nikhil and their PAs. On her absence at the meeting, she later said, “The meeting was between the PM

The Mamata Banerjee government has urged the Centre not to send the Shramik Special trains, ferrying hundreds of guest workers from different states, to West Bengal till May 26 due to its occupation with the relief and rehabilita­tion operations in the aftermath of Cyclone Amphan.

On Friday state chief secretary Rajiva Sinha wrote to Railway Board chairman V K Yadav, “As you are aware, West Bengal has been severely impacted by Super Cyclone Amphan 20/21” May, 2020 causing extensive damage to the infrastruc­ture. As district administra­tion is involved in relief and rehabilita­tion works, it will not be possible to receive special trains for the next few days.”
