Kolkata, May 26: TMC legislator Abdul Khalek Mollah and four others were injured on Tuesday while trying to intervene and persuade a group of people who were protesting over disruption of electricity to their locality in Kolkata, the police said. The Metiabruz MLA has been admitted to Calcutta Medical Research Institute.

Failing to get power and water supply even a week after Cyclone Amphan, an angry mob mercilessly beat a Trinamul Congress MLA leaving him injured at his own constituency in the port area of the city. Abdul Khalek Mollah, the Metiabruz MLA, has been admitted to Calcutta Medical Research Institute.

On Tuesday afternoon local residents of Badartala at Nadial, with dense Muslim population, burst in anger in large numbers over no power and water supply to their homes. Launching a protest at around 4 pm they blocked road, alleging that the local MLA was yet to visit the area.

Mr Mollah rushed to the spot.

His presence however added fuel to the fire only. As Mr Mollah tried to pacify the mob, he was confronted by the demonstrators who abused him verbally triggering an altercation that turned violent. The Trinamul

MLA bore the brunt of their fury. Later the police rescued him.

The daylight attack on Mr Mollah turned out to be a repeat of history when CPI(M) MLA Gopal Gayen was sprayed mud by the villagers who then forced him to walk through mud at Hingalganj in North 24 Parganas over his absence in the aftermath of Cyclone Aila in 2009.

Meanwhile a fire-fighter died after he was electrocuted while cutting an uprooted tree which was lying on a livewire at Belur in Howrah on Wednesday, prompting chief minister Mamata Banerjee to slam the CESC.
