CBI seeks clarification from 6 Tablighi Jamaat staffers

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

The CBI, probing the alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) by Tablighi Jamaat, has decided to seek clarifications from six office-bearers of the outfit and sons of its chief, Maulana Saad. The agency, sources said, is also scrutinising call detail records of Maulana Saad and his sons.

Sources in the agency said, “The agency has identified at least six office-bearers of the outfit who indulged in dubious cash transactions and also concealed foreign funding from the government agencies. The agency will soon seek clarifications from them.”

“Besides, call detail records of Maulana Saad and his two sons are also being scrutinised by the CBI sleuths,” they added.

The CBI recently registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) against the organisers of Tablighi Jamaat for alleged dubious cash transactions and non-disclosure of funds received from abroad.

The CBI initiated the inquiry on a complaint that the organisers and trustees of Tablighi Jamaat indulged in dubious cash transactions through illegal or unfair means and did not disclose the funds received from abroad.

There are allegations that the organisers had not disclosed the foreign donations to the authorities mandated under the FCRA for the purpose.

“If the CBI finds incriminating evidence during the enquiry, it would register a regular case into the matter. Without registering a regular case, the agency does not have power to call anybody to the CBI headquarters for recording the statement.

“If the agency converts the PE into a regular case, then only CBI can send summons to the people. At this point of time, the CBI can only seek clarifications from the office-bearers of Tablighi Jamaat,” sources clarified.
