Covid cases cross 2,600 mark in J&K, 3 more die

Three more people died of Covid-19 in J&K on Monday, taking the toll to 31.

With as many as 155 new positive cases emerging during the day, the number of Covid-19 patients in the UT has crossed the 2,600 mark. More than 60 people are being treated for the virus in Ladakh, but local officials said that half of them have already “recovered”.

An official spokesman in Jammu said that of the 155 new Covid-19 cases, 99 were reported from Jammu division and 56 from Kashmir Valley on Monday, thus taking the total number of such patients in J&K to 2,601.

“Also, three deaths were reported during the day including one from Jammu division and two from Kashmir division,” the spokesman said.

He, however, also said that 19 more Covid-19 patients have recovered and were discharged from various hospitals earlier during the day. “So far, 946 patients have recovered whereas out of 176,309 test results available, 173,708 samples have been tested as negative till June 1. Additional­ly, till date 176,805 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillan­ce which included 38,276 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 38 in hospital quarantine, 1,624 in hospital isolation and 48,964 under home surveillan­ce,” the spokesman said. He added, “Besides, 87,872 persons have completed their surveillan­ce period”.

As far the fatalities, the Srinagar district has recorded highest number of seven followed by Anantnag and Baramulla with five each. Kulgam district has reported four deaths, Shopian three, Budgam and Jammu two each and Bandipora, Doda and Udhampur one each.

Meanwhile, days after a senior IAS officer tested positive for the virus, the authoritie­s on Monday started sanitisati­on of the civil secretaria­t in winter capital Jammu.
