20 killed as 3 districts in Assam hit by landslides

At least 20 people, including seven from one family, died in a series of landslides that rocked southern Assam’s Barrak Valley on Tuesday. Among those dead are seven people each in Cachar and Hailakandi districts, and six in Karimganj district.

Officials said the incessant heavy rains seen for the last couple of days had led to the landslides. The state government rushed disaster response teams and the local minister and MLAs to supervise operations. The local authoritie­s said they had shifted people from the affected areas to relief camps.

At least nine people died in the deluge and close to four lakh people in seven Assam districts were affected across 356 villages of Nalbari, Goalpara, Nagaon, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts. The floods have so far damaged crops in 2,678 hectares and affected 44,331 domestic animals and 9,350 poultry. Goalpara district is the worst hit, followed by Nagaon and Hojai. ■

Seven people, including two children and a woman, were killed and two others seriously

injured in a landslide that hit a tin house at Mohanpur area near Bolobabaza­r in Hailkandi district around 6 am, said a spokesman of the district administra­tion.

The injured were rushed to the S K Civil Hospital at district headquarte­rs Hailakandi.

In neighbouri­ng Karimganj district, five family members, including a woman and three children, were killed in another landslide at Karimpur around 3.30 am, said district SP Kumar Sanjit Krishna.

In Cachar district, seven people were killed by landslides at Kolapur village of Jaypur, police officials said.

President Ram Nath Kovind and chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled the loss of lives in the landslides.

“The loss of lives due to heavy rains and landslides in Barak valley, Assam is tragic. Local authoritie­s are undertakin­g rescue and relief efforts. Condolence­s to the bereaved families. Prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being,” the President’s official tweeter handle posted.
