A GHMC outsourcing employee jumped in front of chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s convoy just as he was leaving Gun Park, opposite Public Garden, on Tuesday, gravely endangering his own safety and breaching the CM’s security.

J. Hanmanthu Naik, a driver with the GHMC’s Disaster Response Force, wanted to give the CM a representation for a government 2BHK house.

The incident caused some tense moments as at least 50 city police officers and police personnel, some of them armed, were guarding Gun Park, where the CM had come to pay tribute at the Martyrs’ Memorial to mark State Formation Day.

At 8.53, the CM sat in his bulletproof vehicle and the convoy moved just five metres when Naik came running and darted in front of the vehicles. Alert police officials dragged him away, and the CM left. The police took Naik into custody.

Central Zone DCP P. Viswa Prasad said, “The security personnel stopped him at least one and a half meters from the CM’s vehicle.”

Preliminary inquiries revealed that Naik, a graduate, is married and has two children. Hailing from Devarakonda mandal in Nalgonda district, he has been living in the city for four to five years.

“Hanmanthu wrote the police constable examinations in 2016 and 2018, but did not succeed. He worked as a private driver for some time and then as a manager of a function hall. He has been working as a driver with a DRF team for the last four months with a salary of about `15,000,” DCP Viswa Prasad said.

Responding to a query, the DCP said, “Hanmanthu wanted to grab the attention of the chief minister. He was carrying a letter of representation to give the CM seeking a double bedroom house. Further inquiries are underway.”
