No time for politics, govt should help people: Didi

- RAJIB CHOWDHURI

Lashing out at the BJP's cry for her “ouster” from power in West Bengal, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday made it clear that she has no demand for Narendra Modi’s removal as the Prime Minister of the country. Her assertion comes a day after the saffron party launched a social media campaign — Banglar Nobonirman (Reconstruction of Bengal) — against her government in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic and Cyclone Amphan's devastation in the state.

At a programme on World Environment Day, Ms Banerjee said, “While on one hand, when we are battling to save people from all types of disasters, be it Covid-19 or Cyclone Amphan, a political party is constantly campaigning to oust us from power in Bengal first and votes for them. Is this the time for politics? I want to ask the public about it. I am not saying Narendra Modi should be driven out from Delhi. I think this is not the time for politics.”

“There will be lots of time to do politics later. Why are you doing it now? Go help people, plant trees, clean the ponds. For the last three months, no one stepped out of home in fear. All of them had gone into hiding. Only we can take pride in going out to shops and markets and reaching out to the people to stand by them,” she added.

The Trinamul Congress supremo alleged, “The Central government has allowed the movements of lakhs of people (guest workers) in an unplanned way across the country without any food and treatment”
