- AGE CORRESPONDENT

The Prime Minister on Friday compared Uttar Pradesh with developed European nations like England, France, Italy and Spain in terms of Covid-19 fatalities and said that the four biggest nations’ total population was 24 crore which is equivalent to that of UP — yet the Indian state had only 611 Corona virus related deaths whereas these countries had 1.3 lakh deaths. This was because of the state government’s singular efforts in combating the pandemic, Mr Narendra Modi said while inaugurating through video conferencing, the Atma Nirbhar Uttar Pradesh Rozgar Abhiyan.

Yogi Adityanath for his handling of the pandemic and the resultant crisis of guest workers moving to the state on foot, after being stranded in big cities after the sudden announcement of the lockdown, which did not give enough time to them to return to their native places.

Incidentally though, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, as per the 2011 census, are the two major states from where around 40 per cent of the total number of people who migrated within states across the country, belong. Also as per Uttar Pradesh government’s own records, 34 lakh unemployed people were registered with its labour department as on February 2020.

Till June 2018, there were around 21 lakh educated unemployed persons registered with the labour ministry of the state. Therefore in two years, there has been an increase of 12 lakh unemployed persons in Uttar Pradesh.

Lauding Yogi Adityanath for his deft handling of the guest workers crisis, the Prime Minister said: “The chief minister understood the seriousness of the situation and he and his team went on a war footing to ensure that 240 million people could be safe and control the spread of the disease as much as possible.”
